The Main Line Bead Society is excited to announce that our 2019 summer bead retreat will be held on Saturday, August 3, from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm.  There will be separate morning and afternoon classes taught by two instructors who are back at MLBS by popular demand!

This year two innovative classes are being brought to us by Mary Soucy of Bead Me a Story and Jenny Davies-Reazor, Mixed Media artist. Pictures and descriptions of the projects that will be featured at this year's retreat are presented below. Both of our artists will feature a trunk show in addition to their classes, so empty out your piggy bank and plan to do some serious shopping either during our lunch break or from 4:00 - 4:30 pm.

There will be a one-hour lunch break between classes from to noon to 1:00 pm. Sandwiches, chips, and beverages will be provided for lunch. (You may also bring a brown bag lunch if you prefer.)

Reserve your spot early by clicking on the registration button below because space is limited. Please register and pay for the class(es) you wish to take by July 29th to allow our guest artists sufficient time to prepare the required kits/supplies for the classes.

Spiral Necklace with Berry & Farfalle Beads

Artist: Mary Soucy of Bead Me a Story

9:00 am - 12:00 noon

Pictured: Spiral with Faralle Beads, Spiral with Berry Beads and Basic spiral chain

Experience Level: Experienced Beginner to Advanced

Spiral Chain necklaces made of chain maille are stunning to behold!  In this class, you will learn to add farfalle or berry beads into spiral chains to add a new dimension to your work.  You will choose your own beads and color series of jump rings to work with. This is a class that will allow your creativity to flourish.

First time beginners to chain maille are welcome to this class.  Simple spiral chains that do not require farfalle or berry beads to be added will be available for you to learn this weave before moving on to the addition of beads.  More advanced students can choose either farfalle or berry beads to add into their necklaces. The color and bead options on this necklace are virtually unlimited!  (The art bead example shown in the center photo is sold separately, and Mary will be bringing a tray of various artist beads if you want to purchase one to add to your finished necklace.)

Participants should bring tools appropriate for chain maille (2 pairs of flat, chain, chisel and/or bent nose pliers), plus a jump ring opening tool would also be helpful. There will also be some extra tools available for purchase.  If you have difficulty seeing small objects, bring your magnifier and light.

Class fees including materials are outlined on the registration form.

You've Been Framed - Mixed-Media Pendant

Artist: Jenny Davies-Reazor, Mixed Media Artist

1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Experience Level: Suitable for all skill levels

During our afternoon class, Jenny will help us to explore the wonderful world of polymer clay coupled with mixed media! This class will allow you to play with multiple versatile mediums.

The project will start with a focal image* such as a vintage postage stamp, art history reference, or personal image (favorite family picture, pet, etc.). We will frame the image* in a metal bezel and then sculpt a polymer frame to showcase the piece resulting in an attractive memory pendant. Students will complete two memory pendants in this class.

* OPTIONAL - Students may bring a color copy of their favorite photo or picture if desired.  Copies of your image should be small enough to fit the bezel size (approximately the size of a postage stamp or just slightly larger with 3/4" to 1 1/2" as a broad guideline). Jenny will have a variety of bezel sizes and shapes. Color images and other supplies will be available if you choose to use Jenny's images.

Class fees including materials are outlined on the registration form.

The retreat will be held at our usual meeting location on the lower level:

St. Michael's Lutheran Church

400 Lynbrooke Road

Springfield, PA 19064
